Hochzeitspolka

Feature Film | DE 2010 | 93' | OV

»Basically this is a wild country.« Former German Rock’n’Roll singer Frieder decides not to heed his father’s warning and to take the job managing a Polish factory instead. Three years later he’s got his hands full organizing his wedding, to which unfortunately not only his parents but also his old bandmates show up – who quickly run into trouble with the locals. Chaos ensues, dark secret are revealed and some seances are held. After his debut, the 80s nostalgia comedy THE DAY THAT BOBBY EWING DIED, director Lars Jessen reunites with screenwriter Ingo Heab for his third feature. Not only are the punchlines of their culture clash comedy brilliantly timed, they also shine a light on the difficult relationship between Germany and Poland. HOCHZEITSPOLKA blithely reverses all stereotypes and shows a vision of cultural understanding in the form of a turbulent festival of misunderstandings – as long as everybody drinks and laughs together, things can’t be that bad. Or as long as there’s a translator present which the ability to lie shamelessly.
