The Woods

Feature Film | USA 2011 | 93' | OV

At the beginning of  Matthew Lessner’s biting satire on youth and society a group of young people haul flat-screen TVs and washing machines into the woods in order to start a new civilization there. With the help of his amateur actors, a hilarious voice-over and hypnotic images the 28 year old debut writer and director manages to squeeze ninety minutes worth of absurd and weird details from this hair-raising premiss. With the shocking realism of his hand-held camera Lessner shows these Macbook Marxists, complete with inner fractions and cabin fever. When the outside civilization (supposedly) collapses completely and the PlayStations finally lose their power, the group regresses back to the stone age in a mixture of LORD OF THE FLIES and DUMB AND DUMBER. It’s a full-fledged attack on the »Into the Wild«-romanticism of a generation that can’t even miss a reality TV episode without breaking down crying; that thinks karaoke and jet-ski are statements of defiance; and whose world revolution already fails at establishing a Facebook group.
