Romeos

Feature Film | DE 2011 | 94' | OV

For his voluntary year of social service Lukas is put up in a girls dorm – which seems logical since Lukas used to be called Miriam not long ago. Hormonally he’s all man now – voice, beard and everything – but the private parts are still wrong, which is why Lukas wears extra large shirts. And his last weeks before the final operation are full of entanglements: Fun-loving lesbian Ine is reluctant to lose her best friend Miriam; gay top dog Fabio can’t find out that he’s making out with a girl; and, most important of all, Lukas himself must learn to come to terms with himself, which isn’t easy is his particular situation.
Sabine Bernardi’s debut feature tells a transgender story about (self) acceptance and first love with delightfully quiet and subtle humor. The script and the amazing cast never fall into the trap of consternation, but rather find interesting facets of their characters – first among them Lukas himself, who tries out his new body and his new life with anger, fear and self-loathing, but also with vitality and lust for life.
