In any duel between two brilliant comedians like Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, there will always be one certain winner: the audience. Following previous collaborations with the two Brits in 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE and A COCK AND BULL STORY, director Michael Winterbottom now has them playing themselves in THE TRIP. Viewers never quite know where the line is crossed between the role and the true person, between the screenplay and ad-libbed dialogue. The story begins as weekly newspaper The Observer commissions Coogan to review six restaurants in northern England. He originally intends to have his girlfriend come along, but then his principals insist he take Brydon with him for the ride. From the car seats to the restaurant tables to the hotel beds, the two egomaniacal comedians never cease to fight. Who is the brighter, who is the funnier guy – and who is the better impersonator of Michael Caine, Al Pacino, and Sean Connery? Broadcasted in England as a six-part BBC series, the Cologne Conference presents the two-hour US theatrical version.
