Following forays into genre film, Matthieu Kassovitz (HATE) returns to a more personal and more political cinema in REBELLION, which also marks his return to his form of old. REBELLION tells the story of the uprising of an indigenous people. In 1988, 30 gendarmes are taken hostage in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia. A French police negotiator is dispatched on a plane to the isles in the Pacific to end the dispute without bloodshed. However, as François Mitterrand’s and Jacques Chirac’s campaigns for the presidency are underway, politics come into play and change the game. Kassovitz, who also stars in the lead role and co-wrote the screenplay, leaves no doubt from the outset that the conflict will end in a massacre. His painstaking examination seeks to determine what led to the needless loss of human lives. Fueled by rage, this is a gripping film steeped in allusions to the ongoing »war on terror«.
