At the beginning it’s only a party flirt, and in India – modern as it may be – this is all it is allowed to be: For the beautiful Trishna is daughter to a ricksha driver, while Jay is the heir to a veritable real estate empire complete with hotel. But the two of them don’t care about class issues, and when Trishna’s father has an accident, Jay offers her a job at his hotel. But when she makes new friends and tries to advance herself in society even more, the relationship gets out of hand. After having done US winter Westerns, British doku-dramas, SciFi love stories and Afghan fugitive films Michael Winterbottom, cinema’s wold traveler and constant chameleon, turns to a tragic love affair in modern India. His story is loosely based on »Tess of the d’Urbervilles« and marks his second adaptation of a Thomas Hardy novel after JUDE. He once again relies heavily on his principal cast and is not let down by the enchanting and expressive Freida Pinto in the film’s centre role.
