Braunschlag

TV-Series | AUT 2012 | 2x45' | OV

TWIN PEAKS in Lower Austria’s Waldviertel? Or rather a »Heimatfilm in eight instalments«, as writer-director David Schalko calls his series, referring to the classic German-language genre of sentimental films set in rural locales? It is both, topped with a good helping of trademark Austrian humor. In BRAUNSCHLAG, the eponymous backwater hole is about to go broke. Mayor Tschach feels he is left with only one solution: he needs a miracle. Joining forces with his best friend, local disco owner Pfeisinger, he concocts a plan to lure thousands of pilgrims into their village. Of course, not everything goes as planned: the amateurish Marian apparition staged by the two friends prompts the Vatican to send an investigator – a kind of Philip Marlowe in a cassock. Meanwhile, Tschach’s wife starts to display very odd behavior, and Pfeisinger’s spouse becomes pregnant despite her husband’s infertility. A true miracle? Bending reality beyond recognition and back again, BRAUNSCHLAG succeeds in making the most absurd events appear perfectly normal in the end. As David Lynch would have it: »It’s a strange and beautiful world«.
