Enlightened

TV-Series | USA 2011 | 2x30' | OV

It starts with a nervous breakdown. Like a fury, career woman Amy (Laura Dern) dashes upon her superior to hold him to account: she has just learned that she has been fired – the result of an affair with her married boss. He brushes her off. On a stay to recuperate from that, Amy regains her inner equilibrium on Hawaii. Invigorated by meditation and yoga, and well-equipped with self-help books, she returns to L.A. only to find that, though she herself may have changed, the world she has left has not. Shifting as seamlessly from comedy to tragedy as Amy goes from depression to enlightenment, HBO’s series “Enlightened” also keeps an equal distance from the conventions of the modern workplace and the esoteric delusions of wealthy Westerners beset by their midlife crises. Kudos are in order to lead actress Laura Dern in particular, who also co-wrote and co-produced “Enlightened”, for never allowing the protagonist to be turned into a laughing stock.
