Girls

TV-Series | USA 2012 | 2x30' | OV

The most hyped US series of the year. Notable for its stunningly frank, realistic, and humorous tone, GIRLS revolves around the lives of a group of four New York women in their mid-twenties. In contrast to their somewhat older peers from SEX AND THE CITY, their minds are less set on fashion and careers, but more preoccupied with issues like financial dependence on their parents, roommate troubles, and warehouse parties in Williamsburg – sex, on the other hand, does not take a backseat either. The central character is Hannah, 24, a professor’s daughter and wannabe author (she’s already writing her memoirs) working in an unpaid internship at a publishing company. Hannah is played by 26-year-old Lena Durham, who almost single-handedly got GIRLS made: the series is her brainchild, she wrote the entire first season, directed half of its episodes, and also acted as producer – with Judd Apatow (THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, KNOCKED UP). Cable network HBO has given a young talent lots of leeway – a level of trust that was richly rewarded.
