The Hollow Crown: Richard II

TV-Movie | GB 2012 | 142' | OV

With projects like SHAKESPEARE RETOLD or Peter Brook’s HAMLET the BBC has shown in recent years how to unearth a national treasure in a stirring and successful way. THE HOLLOW CROWN is of the same mold: a miniseries of four two-hour adaptations of Shakespeare’s historically consecutive plays RICHARD II, HENRY V and the two parts of HENRY IV. In best theatre style these adaptations avoid excessive sets and lavish costumes, instead confining themselves to minimal equipment in order to put the focus firmly on the magnificent actors. For, and this is another locational advantage of the Brits, even this first installment – the rarely played RICHARD II – features a cast of brilliant thespians who bring passionate life to the Bard’s complex verses: Ben Whishaw, James Purefoy and Patrick Stewart all deliver breathtaking performances here. The result is cultural TV at its very finest, a thing all too rarely seen in the rest of Europe: smart, suspenseful, honest and bold enough to have artistic standards.
