A project transcending media boundaries, WER IST THOMAS MÜLLER? (Who is Thomas Müller?) is a tongue-in-cheek investigation of the phantom of the average German. The quintessence of 81 million people has been distilled under pressure from statistics for so long until this »super everyman« came out. But who is the face to the statistically most common name in Germany? Who is the most average Thomas Müller of Germany? Exploiting synergies between cinema, TV, and the Internet, this cross-media project boldly intertwines them: the film’s central element is its online portion. The filmmakers around the producers Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo discuss how they managed to bring the phantom Thomas Müller to (virtual) life and have him interact with viewers and his »followers« and »Facebook friends,« and how this content generated online has been fed right back into the documentary film.
