I Am Divine

Documentary | USA 2013 | 90' | OV

25 years ago, one of the most eccentric movie stars ever to rise from the USA died from a heart attack at the age of 42: Harris Glenn Milstead, better known under the name Divine. John Waters’ (HAIRSPRAY) career would be hard to imagine without his discovery of the then 16-year-old Milstead. In EAT YOUR MAKEUP, Waters cast him to play Jackie Kennedy, in PINK FLAMINGO, he simply filmed the reactions of passers-by to the overweight actor promenading about in blonde bombshell drag. The most notorious act, however, was something else: in PINK FLAMINGOS, Divine was filmed eating dog droppings. Featuring interviews and many film excerpts, I AM DIVINE is a touching tribute to a flamboyant showperson who broke taboos for a greater good: employing humor to combat the bigotry of American society and fight for everybody’s right to self-determination – including that of heavyset, in-your-face drag queens.
