The Double

Feature Film | UK 2013 | 93' | OV

Simon James is nothing but a small cog in the machinery: At work people ignore him, even his adored co-worker Hannah is hardly taking notices of him. All this changes when a new colleague arrives: James Simon looks exactly like Simon James, but nobody wants to acknowledge it. At first Simon admires his assertive, charming doppelganger, but soon envy eats away at him and the fight with his double threatens to destroy what is left of his meager existence. Multi-talented Richard Ayoade, known as an actor on THE IT CROWD but also as an emerging writer and director, has earned his first laurels for SUBMARINE. But this adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s novella surely is his masterpiece. He brilliantly steers his equally virtuosic star Jesse Eisenberg through a dystopic, dark-yellow bureaucracy hell, through the undergrowth of interpersonal relationships and most of all through the labyrinth of the protagonist’s psyche. The result: a pitch-perfect harmony of form and performances in this Kafkaesque work of art.
