In September 2013, the ifs internationale filmschule köln started a new international study program: the MA Serial Storytelling. In this 2-year masters’ program, talented writers, producers, and directors specialize in the development of serial forms and formats. Now the first cohort – nine Serial Storytellers from Germany, Switzerland, India, Ghana, France and the United States – presents selected projects from their first year of study. Amongst others, they have been instructed by showrunners, writers and producers, such as Lisa Albert (MAD MEN), Jane Espenson (ONCE UPON A TIME, GAME OF THRONES), Frank Spotnitz (X-FILES, HUNTED) and Peter Nadermann (THE TEAM). Individually and in team work, the students have since created several web series, »spec scripts«, and research papers. Most recently, in a 6-week writers’ room with showrunner Morgan Gendel (V.I.P., DROP DEAD DIVA), the group developed the concept and nine episodes for a fantasy thriller series. In the context of the Cologne Conference this first class gives an insight into its work.
