Listen Up Philip

Feature Film | USA 2014 | 108' | OV

Philip (Jason Schwartzman in a great performance) is as talented as he is unbearable. The young writer is about to follow up on his debut with his second published book. That does not exactly make him easier to handle. He brings his publishing house to the brink of despair, because he refuses to give any interviews, treats his girlfriend condescendingly, and alienates everyone else in every conceivable way due to his self-centeredness. Only in the aging writer Ike Zimmerman, a formerly successful author whose character is loosely based on Philip Roth, does he find a kindred spirit. Zimmermann’s self-absorption and cynicism even surpass his own. Alex Ross Perry’s tragicomedy about an intellectual New Yorker can hold its own against the films of Woody Allen or Noah Baumbach. LISTEN UP PHILIP is a feast for any retro fan: smartphones or computers are nowhere to be seen. Books are still written on typewriters, and are not consumed on e-readers. Quite fittingly, the film was shot on Super-16 analog material.
