Embrace of the Serpent (El Abrazo de la Serpiente)

Feature Film | CO 2015 | 125' | Subtitled English

A double journey into the heart of darkness. Early in the 20th century, German explorer Theo travels up the Amazon River in a small rowing boat. He’s hoping to find the rare Yakuna plant as a cure for a mysterious disease that has beset him. His Indian companion Karamakate has grudgingly agreed to help him. On their quest, they encounter thieving indigenous people, victims of the rubber industry, and a priest who has built his own reign of terror in the jungle. Forty years later, an American retraces the earlier expedition – again with Karamakate as a guide. An exhilaratingly hypnotic adventure in black and white, the film takes the audience into an exotic world visibly shaped by colonialism. The story is based on the real-life accounts of German anthropologist Theodor Koch Grünberg and American ethno-botanist Richard Evans Schultes. A must for fans of Werner Herzog’s AGUIRRE and Francis Ford Coppola’s APOCALYPSE NOW.
