Cologne police investigators Brand and Simmel have to fight at two fronts this time. The body of a woman was washed up on a river bank, and her husband has disappeared with the yacht. While everything seems to point to a family tragedy and the psychologically unhinged adoptive son of the couple comes under scrutiny – the father suddenly re-appears with an alibi in the form of an affair. As if this case wasn’t enough to handle already, there’s also deadly peril for Marie Brand, as the convicted murderer Sperl manages to escape and tries to settle the score with the cop who brought him down. But in the end, the greatest danger comes from another direction altogether… Mariele Millowitsch and Hinnerk Schönemann are once again convincing as the ill-matched investigative duo in this crimes series highlight, which gets plenty personal. Besides beautiful visual ideas and atmospheric edits, it’s Dirk Borchardt who attracts the eyes here, as he returns to the series as a grotesquely gruesome double murderer with an unhealthy obsession with Brand.
