ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel: Qissa – Eine Geistergeschichte

Feature Film | DE, FR, IN, NL 2013 | 109' | German

Punjab, Pakistan, 1947: Umber Singh, a Sikh, and his family lose everything in the partition of India, and are forced to leave their homeland. Four years later, the family has recovered economically, and Umber Singh – already a father of three daughters – is looking to finally have a son as his heir. When his fourth daughter is born, he refuses to accept that reality. He names her Kanwar, »young prince,« and raises her as a boy. When Umber arranges the marriage between his »fake« son and Neeli, a girl from a lower caste, the entire family must face the truth about their own identities. The situation escalates. A deeply touching, unusual story told in a quiet and slow-paced, but emotionally stirring way, QISSA has won multiple awards. Following the screening: Q & A about »International Co-Productions« with Claudia Tronnier, Editor-in-Chief, ZDF / Das kleine Fernsehspiel, and Johannes Rexin, Producer, Heimatfilm.
