Homo Sapiens

Documentary | AT 2016 | 94’ | without dialogues

For this completely wordless essay the award-winning documentary filmmaker Nikolaus Geyrhalter visited ghost towns all over the world: Abandoned Soviet prestige buildings, empty Japanese train stations, half-empty supermarkets and storage facilities, crumbling lecture halls and collapsed cinemas, hospitals and gyms. Nature has reclaimed these places, there are plants breaking through the concrete everywhere, frogs jumping through residencies, flies buzzing in empty office buildings, seagulls crying through derelict high-rise blocks, pollen rippling through abandoned shopping malls. The impressive sound design gives these fascinating tableaus a special atmosphere: The world without people seems eerie at first but by and by it gains a sort of ruminant serenity and poetry. HOMO SAPIENS pulls you into its world and provokes questions about the sustainability of our culture, about man’s relationship with nature and about the planet’s future.
