Hong Kong Trilogy: Preschooled Preoccupied Preposterous

Documentary | HK 2015 | 90‘ | OV with English subs

One city, three parts, three generations, three moods: In the first and most emotional segment PRESCHOOLED a group of young students describe their everyday life and school experiences. Then it gets political, with a couple of young adults in PREOCCUPIED taking part in the democratic protests of the Umbrella Movement in 2014. The there’s comedy with a bunch of elderly people in PREPOSTEROUS having one last stab at love via Speed Dating. And in the final coda all the different people gather at the beach to reflect on the future. Legendary director of photography Christopher Doyle, who shot films for masters like Won Kar-wai, pays homage to his adopted city Hong Kong with this documentary triptych – some of it staged and some of it spontaneous, but always seen through his amazing collection of images. The result is a loving portrait, very funny, contemplative and most of all amazing to look at. Christopher Doyle received The Hollywood Reporter Award 2016.
