Tower

Documentary | USA 2016 | 96’ | English OV

It was the first mass shooting on campus in US history: In 1966 a disturbed ex-soldier and engineering student opened fire from the visitor’s platform of the main tower of the University of Texas in Austin, killing 14 and wounding 32. But Keith Maitland’s documentary, which won the Grand Jury Award and the Audience Award at this year’s SXSW festival, doesn’t reconstruct the deed or the perpetrator but rather the fate of the wounded and dying, the police and the people who volunteered to help. With archive material, interviews and animated scenes he takes us back to a time when these mass shootings were still unthinkable. Almost in real time and in meticulous detail he reconstructs those fateful 96 minutes – from the first shots fired at a young pregnant woman and her boyfriend to the spontaneous aid given by passersby right up to the police’s frantic efforts to stop the bloodbath. It’s both an artful and relentless retelling, and a gem of a documentary.
