35 Rhums

Feature Film | FR, DE 2008 | 100’ | French OV with German subs

Much like Leone turned to Ennio Morricone, or Fassbinder to Peer Raben, or Fellini to Nino Rota, filmmaking humanist Claire Denis loves to turn to the »Tindersticks« for an adequate musical foundation to her intimate dramas. Forgoing kitsch and pathos, the self-proclaimed British »chamber pop« creators again strike the right notes between melancholy and elation in 35 RHUMS, providing a score for the story of train conductor Lionel (Alex Descas) and his daughter Joséphine (Mati Diop). The two feel responsible for each other, though both know that they will soon have to part ways, lest they will not be able to each lead their lives according to their own design. Loosely based on Yasujirô Ozu’s LATE SPRING, the storytelling of Claire Denis and musical narrative of her go-to combo flesh out the process of a painful but necessary mutual emancipation. Though further obstacles keep appearing at every single turn for the better, Denis shines a more reassuring light on her heroes than usual, which makes 35 RHUMS one of her most accessible and most uplifting works.
