Hirokazu Koreeda (OUR LITTLE SISTER, LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON) again demonstrates his skill as a master of the quiet, touching family drama. The Japanese director tells the story of failed author Ryota. 15 years ago, he had published an award-winning novel. Now in his late 40s, he works at a detective agency – supposedly to conduct research for a new book. He must admit to himself, though, that he suffers from a case of sustained writer’s block. Like his father before him, Ryota tries to soothe his frustrations with visits to the bookmaker. Hoping to change his life for the better, he eventually attempts to reconcile with his ex-wife and spend more time with their son. However, old wounds do not heal so easily, and old habits are hard to kick. Koreeda never looks down on his characters and perfectly balances melancholy and humor. A wise movie in the tradition of Japanese masters like Yasujirô Ozu and Mikio Naruse.
