Wenn Gott schläft

Documentary | US, DE 2017 | 88‘ | OV with German subs

What effect does it have on a person and his surroundings when there’s a bounty placed on his head? In 2012, a Death Fatwa was called on the Iranian singer-songwriter Shahin Najafi for allegedly ridiculing a song of the revered Shiite Imam Ali al-Naghi. 100,000 dollars would be paid to whoever kills the musician. Till Schauder’s documentary accompanies Najafi on his tour through Germany and in his exile in Cologne – where he is supported by, amongst others, famous German journalist Günter Wallraff. The film makes the eternal stress caused by a sentence like that palpable – and pays homage to Najafi and his courage, who wouldn’t abandon his artistic freedom even when most of his long-time companions have long given up.
