»The great music revolution of today takes place in Africa«, is declared during the first minute, and this internationally co-produced documentary by Lamin Daniel Jadama, Lars Lovén und Göran Olsson travels through the whole continent to prove just that: It tracks down Ghanaian HipHop, Nigerian reggae and South African rap music as well as entirely new styles like the Angolan underground dance music called Kodoro. There are shining new stars to be found, but also thoughtful artists postulating a new self-confidence after the decades of decolonization. Those new African music trends connect history with future, have both local and global roots, and use electronics as well as traditional instruments. Just like its hypnotic, rhythmic musical subject, this documentary also pulsates with lively, psychedelic colors and images, stamping huge intertitles onto the screen and jumping restlessly through the cuts and montages – just as vibrant as the entire continent.
