Like silent movies, shorts films have largely disappeared from theaters – but maybe they have a future in television. The TEN MINUTE TALES on UK commercial broadcaster Sky 1 are short films featuring stories related to Christmas, told in ten minutes, without any words. Music is permitted, and sounds are fine as well, but there may be no speaking. As in cinema at its best, the pictures do the storytelling, i.e. there is dialog and no voice-over narrative to convey, as they so often do on television, all essential information. An impressive cross-section of the British creative industry has been involved in this experiment, ranging from directors like Richard Eyre (IRIS), to screenwriters like Tony Grisoni (FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS), to graphic novelist Neil Gaiman (CORALINE). The list of actors and actresses who have participated is also well worth mentioning – it stretches from newcomer Katie Jarvis (FISH TANK) to veterans Bill Nighy and Timothy Spall. All of them are obviously enjoying the opportunity to let their bodies alone to the talking in these odd and touching short form gems.
