For all intents and purposes, Mertkan should not have to worry about anything in life. The son of a construction magnate from Istanbul, he does not exactly drown himself in work in his father’s company; his mother handles his household chores; so he is left with lots of time for hanging out with his buddies in the city. As a matter of fact, however, Mertkan’s life is hell. A man in his early twenties with no clear goals or ambitions, he endures all humiliations his authoritarian father puts him through in a passive-aggressive state of mind. He doesn’t even rebel when his father commands him to leave his Kurdish girlfriend. But how long can Mertkan suppress his frustration until an outburst will occur? Turkish director Seren Yüce needs no murder or other crime for his gradual build-up of suspense up to the very last scene in his debut feature film. Its astonishing maturity and self-contained coherence has earned MAJORITY the Luigi De Laurentiis Award at the Venice Film Festival. Yüce has the talent it takes to, before long, follow in the footsteps of his Turkish compatriots Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Semih Kaplanoglu, and rise to become an international festival favorite.
