Transcending genres and defying categorization, this is an instant cult movie. FINISTERRAE is Sergio Caballero’s freshman film. The 45-year-old Catalan has been known for years as a trendsetter due to his work as a co-director of the annual Sónar music and multimedia festival in Barcelona. The story revolves around two (russian-speaking) ghosts on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela for their rebirth. They encounter all sorts of strange fellows and talking animals in the course of their trip. A simple recap of the plot, though, cannot do justice to this film and Eduard Grau’s (A SINGLE MAN) outstanding cinematography. To get the gist of it, picture a Monty Python screenplay shot by Luis Buñuel, or a comedy directed by Andrei Tarkovsky under the influence of LSD. Its boldness and eccentricity have earned FINISTERRAE the main prize, the Tiger Award, at this year’s Rotterdam Film Festival.
