It all starts with the legend of French painter François Augiéras, who supposedly left a bunker full of masterpieces somewhere underneath the African desert sand. Three chaotic African adventurers decide to go searching for it; a white artist is inspired by the story to do new works; and then there’s the rebellious recruit of a paramilitary unit, who first gets abandoned in the desert, then becomes a bandit and finally a holy man: He carries the name of François Augiéras and might indeed be the painter’s spirit reborn. After some documentary work award-winning Catalan filmmaker Isaki Lacuesta returns to features with this mystical, picturesque and episodic masterpiece. With DOP Diego Dussuel and mainly local actors he captured breathtaking images of the desert, its city, villages and inhabitants in the west African country of Mali. The narration, too, lets itself get carried by the comedic improvisations, the belief in spirits and the magical places of its location.
