8 Frauen (8 femmes)

Feature Film | FR, IT 2002 | 108' | Subtitled English

An idyllic country house, cut off from the outside world by a massive snow storm. A dead man with a knife stuck in his back, a disconnected phone cable, and eight women under suspicion: Wife and sister, sister-in-law and mother-in-law, daughter and step-daughter, maid and cook. All of them bearing a dark secret, all of them having a motive – as it soon transpires that this household is indeed a snake-pit… EIGHT WOMEN was Ozon’s international breakthrough and might still be his masterpiece: A candy-colored, excessively ironic satire that is both love-letter and parody. With iconoclastic creativity and shameless artificiality Ozon pays homage to two genres – the musical and the locked-room whodunit – as well as to three generations of french acting divas. From the grand dames Deneuve, Ardant and Huppert down to the younger generations of Béart, Ledoyen and Sagnier everyone acts and sings like there’s no tomorrow in this family farce that is both chillingly sarcastic and heartwarmingly lovable.
