Essential Killing

Feature Film | PL, NW, IRL, HUN 2010 | 83' | Subtitled English

Skolimowski’s last film to date is so courageous, original, and energetic it could well be taken for a young man’s work rather than that of a 72-year-old. Vincent Gallo plays an Islamic extremist who is captured by the US Army, tortured, and then hauled off to Poland, but manages to escape during a prisoner transport. With no food in the midst of winter, he desperately tries to stay ahead of his pursuers. All of the evident political references take a backseat to his epic fight for survival – by any and all means. In the grand white open of the snow-covered Polish woods, ESSENTIAL KILLING becomes a film about what makes a person human. Fearless Vincent Gallo plays this initially nameless protagonist (who is called Mohammed, as the end credits reveal) as a man of no words with a terrifying inner drive. His performance earned him the award for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival in 2010. Skolimowski won the Special Jury Prize.
