Four Nights with Anna (Cztery noce z Anna)

Feature Film | PL, FR 2008 | 87' | Subtitled English

A comeback in two ways: FOUR NIGHTS WITH ANNA was Skolimowski’s first film after a hiatus of 17 years, and the first film based on one of his own screenplays he shot in his home country since HANDS UP! had been banned in 1967. FOUR NIGHTS WITH ANNA is a minimalist psychological thriller combining Hitchcock’s favorite themes of voyeurism and transference of guilt with Kafka’s grasp of the inscrutability of apparatus of power. Giving no exact references, the film is set somewhere in Poland at some point in time in the past 30 years. This is the story of an unskilled hospital crematory worker, a loner leading a meager life in his grandmother’s decrepit house. After witnessing an incident of rape, he develops an obsession for the victim, a nurse who lives close by. He manages to sneak into her bedroom for four nights. “Four Nights with Anna” marks Skolimowski’s confident return to the world of film after a 17-year spell largely devoted to painting.
