It was a legendary introduction: In his first case DUISBURG-RUHRORT (1981) Götz George appeared as an undershirt-wearing macho in a dirty flat within a dirty town – and his first word uttered was »shit«. The shock that this welfare case was not a murder victim but our police detective was expertly directed by Hajo Gies and reshaped the German TV landscape forever. It was mainly due to the actor George, bestowing just the right mixture of rough exterior with a heart of gold upon the uncompromising character of Horst Schimanski. This Kultnacht was dedicated to the German cult police detective of all time: After his first case we naturally also showed Dominik Graf’s episode SCHWARZES WOCHENENDE (1986), which impressively dissects the everyday traumata of this Ruhrpott detective; and the brand new Schimanski comeback LOVERBOY, where the now 75-year-old Götz George once again lets the old dog off its leash.
