Mateo, 17, prepares to migrate to Los Angeles in order to support his mother and younger brother back home. The only chance to get out of their small Zapotec village in southern Mexico is by paying an enormous fee for a »Coyote« to be guided across the border. To ensure protection and support on the other side of the border, Mateo joins a local gang that also has presence in Los Angeles. But soon after his initiation he learns the real price: he is supposed to kill a member of the rival gang. Mateo is unable to carry out the murder and the gang leader seeks bitter revenge. With his debut feature project LOS ÁNGELES Harper revisits the Mexican community Santa Ana del Valle in which he used to live as a young Ethnologist. The entire cast are local villagers, non-actors who bring life and authenticity to the diverse characters portrayed in the narrative.
