Spring 1873. Every day, new people arrive from all over Europe in the small mountain village of Göschenen in the Swiss canton of Uri, because the construction of the first tunnel passing under Gotthard Mountain is getting underway. Thousands of workers from many different countries travel to the Swiss Alps to work on the largest and most spectacular construction project of the modern age. Several times, the success of the endeavor comes under threat: the company teeters on the edge of bankruptcy, there are worker uprisings, diseases spread, and soon the first fatalities are cause for grief. In the midst of it all, Anna (Miriam Stein), the daughter of a Swiss carriage driver, German engineer Max (Maxim Mehmet), and Italian miner Tommaso (Pasquale Aleardi) go through many ups and downs – at work as well as in their personal lives. Max Simonischek, Joachim Król, Marie Bäumer and Christoph Gaugler are also starring in supporting roles. The film was helmed by successful Swiss film and television director Urs Egger, who recently won a Grimme Award for DER FALL BRUCKNER.
