At this year’s Film Festival Cologne Juliette Binoche will receive the International Actors Award for her achievements as an actress of world renown. Her latest film, UN BEAU SOLEIL INTERIEUR by Claire Denis, will be screened at this year’s festival.
Juliette Binoche is much more than a captivating presence on the silver screen. For more than thirty years now she has been a cultural institution in European cinema, inspiring and influencing directors and fellow actors with her artistic integrity, her work morale and her versatility. She grew up in a multicultural family with Portugese, Polish, French and Walloon roots – and as a daughter to parents who, as directos, actors and sculpturs, exemplified diverse artistic talents for her. But mainly she comes from a tradition of great French actresses like Catherine Deneuve and Isabelle Huppert, who time and again have resisted the lures of Hollywood in favour of creating timeless pieces of art with international master directors. In the case of Binoche she was front and centre in seminal works by André Téchiné, Leos Carax, Louis Malle, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Abbas Kiarostami, Olivier Assayas, Patrice Leconte, Michael Haneke and many more. No matter if innocent student or cold femme fatale, if loving nurse or bitter widow, if blind idealistic homeless girl or burnt-out Hollywood diva – Binoche can play it all. Her countless awards, among them the Oscar, the European Film Award and Acting prizes in Berlin, Cannes and Venice are only surpassed by her tireless charity work and social engagement for Cambodian orphans and for reporters and filmmakers that are threatened due to their work.
The International Actors Award is given for outstanding achievements in acting in the international film and TV landscape and with the endowment of 10,000 € sponsored by hands-on producers.
