Somewhere in the dark catacombs of an abandoned limestone mine, loner and misfit Emil must have lost his mind and is unable to regain it. His eyes grow ever more erratic, just like his ideas and his behaviour – and there’s a long-gestating feud with his brother Johan (Simon Sears) that claws its way back to the surface. The tension starts to resemble the calm before the storm. Instead of searching for reasons for his confusion, Hlynur Pálmason, in his directorial debut, rather follows Emil’s aimless sinking towards insanity, staring with him into the abysses of daily grind, alcoholism and aggression. Since Pálmason manages to spice this chronicle of a catastrophe foretold with plenty of black humour, the abysses sometimes even twinkle back at him.
