In the third part of Miguel Gomes’s dazzling parade of tales, narrator Scheherazade herself enters the fray as a protagonist. Her episode is a colorful period film-within-a-film, a playful exotistic fantasy of the old orient, staged against the backdrop of modern-day Marseille. However, most of ARABIAN NIGHTS 3 is taken up by the second episode, which could almost be considered a stand-alone documentary, about jobless Portuguese who train captive chaffinches for singing competitions. In the end, this much becomes very clear: Gomes’s huge project is – among many other things – also a declaration of love for storytelling as such. To quote the director himself: »Stories are born from the desires and fears of people. They help us survive.« It is worth noting that ARABIAN NIGHTS draws on research by a team of journalists enlisted to gather suitable material across the country. All of its fantastical and eccentric elements notwithstanding, ARABIAN NIGHTS remains firmly rooted in reality.
