Awareness

The FILM FESTIVAL COLOGNE is committed to creating a respectful, inclusive, and safe environment for everyone. In cooperation with Diversity Culture Cologne, our team continuously reflects on how awareness can be ensured, both within our internal structures and in the festival experience for visitors, partners, and filmmakers.

On-Site Support

Do you feel unsafe, overwhelmed, or simply need someone to talk to? Visit us at the Awareness Point in the foyer of the festival center, Cineplex Filmpalast Köln.

Our Awareness Team is on-site throughout the festival to provide support in case of incidents, always prioritizing the needs of those affected. Together with clear guidelines and preventive measures, we work to make the festival an open and welcoming space for everyone.

Our Diversity Guidelines

We aim to create a respectful, discrimination-free space where everyone feels welcome. All participants share responsibility for treating each other with appreciation and respect.

Age
We respect all generations. Disparaging comments based on being young or old are not accepted. Jokes about “boomers” or the “inexperienced Gen Z” are not welcome. Everyone contributes experiences and perspectives that are equally valuable.

Origin, Ethnicity & Migration
We do not tolerate racist behavior, insults, or exclusion. Questions such as “Where are you really from?” or assumptions based on skin color, accent, or name are discriminatory. We ensure that cultural practices are respected and not appropriated or instrumentalized.

Gender & Gender Identity
We respect every gender identity. No assumptions about gender should be made based on appearance. Ask for a person’s pronouns and use them consistently. Sexist remarks, sexualized comments, or any form of harassment will result in exclusion from the event.

Physical & Mental Abilities
We reject ableism. People with visible or invisible disabilities are equal participants. Accessible areas must be kept clear. Offer assistance only if it is wanted. Phrases such as “despite a disability” or labeling someone as “inspiring” are inappropriate.

Religion & Belief
We respect religious practices, symbols, and traditions as well as atheistic or non-religious beliefs. Derogatory remarks or ridicule of religion or spirituality are not acceptable. We do not tolerate the appropriation or instrumentalization of religious symbols or practices.

Sexual Orientation
We respect all sexual orientations. Homophobic or queerphobic remarks are not tolerated. No one has to justify or explain their orientation. Avoid assumptions about relationships (“Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?”) and use open formulations instead.

Social Background
We respect different social and economic backgrounds. Disparaging comments about educational paths, professions, income, or accents are not acceptable. We strive to create spaces where everyone can participate equally, regardless of status or access to resources.
