WARUM LÄUFT HERR R. AMOK?

Michael Fengler, Rainer Werner Fassbinder | Feature Film | D 1970 | 88’ | German OV

The answer to the titular question remains elusive to this day. It might have been the monotony of his office job, his loveless, shallow marriage, the petit bourgeois squeeze, his undiagnosed mania, or a catastrophic mixture of all these elements, that put the once respectable Mr. Raab (Kurt Raab) over the top. In the end, it doesn’t really matter. These snapshots of a German petty bourgeois live, that director Michael Fengler captured in collaboration with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, manifest an oppressive atmosphere of torpor – with Mr. R. seeing only one way to break free. The question maybe shouldn’t be “why?” but “why not sooner?”. In the end, there’s only the horror – and a classic of New German Cinema.
