LUCICA UND IHRE KINDER

Bettina Braun | Documentary | D 2018 | 90’ | German OV

Lucica from Romania lives in a one-room apartment in Dortmund with her six children. Her husband is in jail and there’s hardly enough money to feed the kids. And then there’s her struggle with the German bureaucracy. Bettina Braun, who already tackled migrants’ biographies with her WAS LEBST DU? trilogy, once again finds herself drawn into the story. As a documentary filmmaker, is she obligated to watch and do nothing? Or, on the contrary, is it her duty not to ignore her protagonist’s predicament. Braun crafts a both nuanced and unsparing film about economic migration within the EU which, thanks to Lucica’s children, also has plenty of moments of levity.
