Living space in Tokyo is scarce and walls are thin. The solution for music lovers: so-called “listening cafés,” places where you can listen to vinyl records in peace, usually on excellent sound systems. Such cafés and bars have been around since the 1920s. A CENTURY IN SOUND presents three with a long history, one each for classical, jazz, and rock/pop. Not only does this open up a century of Japanese (pop) culture, but the film also becomes a touching portrait of the older, eccentric owners of these cafés.
