Winfried sets off for Bucharest to visit his daughter Ines, who is currently working there. The old 68-year-old has the impression that the management consultant is unhappy with her career-focussed life. Enter Winfried's alter ego Toni Erdmann: with false teeth, a wig and ill-fitting suits, he tries to lure his daughter out of her shell. The supposed ‘life coach’ Toni keeps turning up unannounced in all kinds of inappropriate situations in Ines' life. Maren Ade's masterpiece, honoured with five European Film Awards, among others.
