A life reduced to a single purpose: Luma leads her existence as a dairy cow on an English farm. Her days are structured into eating and being milked. Now and then her claws are maintained, the vet comes by, Luma gives birth to two calves. In her documentary Andrea Arnold (AMERICAN HONEY) restricts herself totally to the cow’s subjective experience, with the camera always close to Luma’s eyes, thereby not only creating empathy with the creature but also making her completely heteronomous life almost physically palpable to the viewer. A radical and eye-opening experience.
