The mad scientists of American New Wave are finally the subject of a worthy documentary film. Chris Smith and editor Joey Scoma weave together concert recordings, music videos, old and new interviews, drawings by keyboardist Mark Mothersbaugh and animations to create a playful, anarchistic collage. The spirit of the band with its mixture of ideas from Dada, Warhol and trashy science fiction could hardly have been better honoured. Variety summarises it well: “DEVO is a documentary that’s every bit as fun as its subject.”
