To try to describe DIAMANTINO in few words might be futile. Maybe like this: If John Waters, Pedro Almodóvar and Miguel Gomez would do LSD together and then produce a comedy about the current zeitgeist, the result might look something like this. Titular hero Diamantino Matamouros is an international football sensation with a big heart and a rather empty head who doesn’t realize that the African fugitive boy he takes into his house is actually a female undercover agent for the IRS – all similarities to Cristiano Ronaldo’s case are totally coincidental, of course. Daniel Schmidt and Gabriel Abrantes combine celebrity culture, the migration crisis, the rise of right-wing extremism in Europe and many more themes, season everything with lots of ideas and heart, and churn out what is without a doubt one of the weirdest comedies.
