In 1996 Tobias Gruben died of an overdose aged 33. He was the singer and lyricist for the Hamburg alternative rock band Die Erde. But Oliver Schwabe’s documentary is just as moving if you’ve never heard of Gruben or his music. Schwabe portraits an artist obsessed by his calling and wishing nothing more than being approved of by his father. But with his punk-inspired music and his lifestyle the only reaction he got from the renowned professor was incomprehension and rejection.
