DALLAS meets Thomas Bernhard – that is one way to capture the essence of David Schalko's new series. Anyone expecting the Austrian director to strike gentler notes after the success of BRAUNSCHLAG could not have been more wrong. ALTES GELD (OLD MONEY) probes the deepest abysses and cultivates the blackest humor in German-language series in a long time. Called a »story without empathy« by Schalko himself, it revolves around a ruthless patriarch, Rolf Rauchensteiner (Udo Kier), and his equally depraved children. The business tycoon desperately needs a new liver. His solution: whoever brings him the vital organ will be the sole heir to his fortune. Schalko depicts the super-rich as a caste that has parted with morality and compassion long ago – they leave such petty concerns to the middle class. They are driven by greed, and »Freunderlwirtschaft« – the Austrian flavor of cronyism – governs all their actions. While BRAUNSCHLAG is slated for a U.S. remake, it is rather doubtful that Hollywood will consider the same for ALTES GELD.
