LAS HEREDERAS

The silent Chela and the outgoing Chiquita have been a couple for a long time. They get by financially by selling the furniture they inherited one by one. When Chiquita has to go to prison for her debts, Chela decides to occasionally leave the apartment, takes on a job as driver for the rich women of the neighbourhood – and meets the younger Angy. Marcelo Martinessi’s first feature, a South American- European co-production, is both a relentless and poetic portrait of everyday social life in Paraguay and has won more than a dozen international prizes including two bears at this year’s Berlinale. With stark contrast settings, muted colors and subtle acting he explores his character’s innermost desires and fears and thus crafts a small humanistic masterpiece.
