Animation filmmaker Bruce Bickford doesn’t need computers or a studio staffed with illustrators to make his visions come alive – some colorful clay suffices. However, his films have little in common with the good clean fun of WALLACE AND GROMIT: theirs is an unsettling and doubtlessly x-rated world, skillfully created by this supreme master of clay animation, who has for decades been working on them in his one-man studio near Seattle – no wonder Frank Zappa hired him for several of his music films. The documentary shows Bickford engrossed in his tedious and diligent endeavor, and traces the recurring themes of his movies to origins in his family’s tragic past.
